Pre-Summer A/C Checks for Florida Heat

By the time Port St. Lucie hits the mid-90s with matching humidity, a weak RV air conditioner stops being an inconvenience and starts being a real problem. A few checks in March or April can save you a miserable afternoon in June.

1. Check the airflow at every vent

Turn the A/C on and walk through the rig with your hand under each ceiling vent. Weak or uneven airflow at one vent usually means a blocked duct or a failing blower motor — not something to diagnose by ear, but easy for us to check with a clamp meter and a duct camera on-site.

2. Look at the rooftop unit's condition

If you can safely get on the roof (or want us to do it during a routine visit), check for:

• Cracked or yellowed shroud plastic — UV damage lets water in
• Loose mounting bolts — vibration works them loose over a season of driving
• Visible rust or corrosion on the base pan

3. Listen for compressor cycling

A healthy unit cycles the compressor on a regular rhythm. If yours short-cycles (on for a minute, off for a minute, repeat) or runs constantly without cooling, that's often a refrigerant or capacitor issue — both are things we carry parts for on the truck.

4. Check the thermostat response time

Set the thermostat a few degrees below room temperature and time how long it takes the compressor to kick on. More than a minute or two of delay can point to a control board problem.

5. Clean or replace the filter

This one's genuinely DIY — a clogged filter starves the coil of airflow and makes everything else on this list worse. Most RV interior filters slide out without tools. If yours is caked with dust, replace it before summer, not during a heat wave.
